In the United States, many people know about Cinco de Mayo. Huge crowds cannot wait to start the festivities every May. But few know the really history for this Mexican celebration. The average person in the States will say it has something to do with “the Mexican freedom thing,” that is not the truth. Independence Day for Mexico is the 16th of September.
During the 1950s, the United States had a program called The Good Neighbor Policy that encouraged Americans to reach out to our neighboring countries. Cinco de Mayo was first introduced to Americans at this time. In the 1960s, Chicano activists made the holiday more visible as a method to inspire cultural pride among Mexican-Americans.
Through the following decades, this celebration kept growing with the “popular culture” movement. The commercialism of Cinco de Mayo finally pushed it into the mainstream, advertising it as a fun new holiday for food and alcoholic beverages. The correct meaning for this holiday, the victory over the French by Mexico in 1862, has gotten a bit watered down.
As Cinco de Mayo’s mainstream status grew, more Americans became interested in celebrating it. People began to look into Mexican traditions, music, and food. Cinco de Mayo would soon become a hotly anticipated holiday every year.

When LED Grow Lights hit the indoor growing scene a few years back, they did so with a fair amount of controversy. How do they stack up against the standard HID grow light and can they produce results that are even close to the hype? If you do your homework and a little bit of investigating to find the best LED grow lights, the answer is a resounding “YES.”
The most important concept to understand about LED grow lights is that you are swapping the brute-force tactics used by metal halide and high pressure sodium grow lights for the gentle strength and simplicity of the technological break-through of LED grow lights.
With a typical HID light setup - replete with expensive accessories like fans, ducting, ballasts, etc. - the full spectrum of white light is emitted. From red to blue and all wavelengths between, your plants are bombarded with light and a tremendous amount of heat without regard for its actual effectiveness. HID grow lights have an average of 15% efficiency, the lion’s-share of energy is thrown away in the form of wasted light (un-absorbable) and unnecessary heat. Do you like throwing away money?

Even today one can find Victorian style gas lamp shades in people’s homes, or in lobbies of fancy hotels. The reason for their endurance even some hundred years after their formal replacement by electrical lighting is due to two factors. One, they still hold appeal as part of the trend of returning to Victorian era style. Two, they are just as functional for electrical bulbs as they were for gas flames.
The Victorian era glass shade spread during Queen Victoria’s reign of Great Britain; however, the origins can be placed further back to the invention of the first controlled gas lighting device. In the late 18th century in Great Britain, an inventor named William Murdoch became the first man to try hooking up a gas supply with consistent flow rate to fuel a gas flame.
William Murdoch was employed by a company specializing in making steam engines for the mining industry. Because of his connection to coal mines, he was able to secure a supply of coal gas to do his experiments.
