Pacific Coast Gardeners - Doing Dahlias

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

Just because Pacific Coast gardeners live in a very favored climate, where winters are mild and the ground rarely freezes, many are under the impression that you can plant most things the year around and expect them to grow like magic. Nature has provided certain seasons for successful growth of each kind of plant.

Doing Dahlias

Dahlias demand, because of their warm Mexican background, a warm and consistently even temperature. if you start your dahlias too early because the weather is warm they may develop healthy and rapid growth but, if the weather should change and the ground become chilled, growth will be checked. This starting and stopping develops a hard woody structure and results in dahlia plants that cannot perform at their best. Dahlias must be planted late enough so that the weather is settled and be kept under even growing conditions. Tubers are usually set from late March to June.

Economy-Friendly Light Bulbs And Their Numerous Advantages

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

Reducing energy costs is of course, a world-wide issue that in effect is going to mean governments around the world will be under pressure to cease the production of older inefficient light bulbs.

Although Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) have been available for many years now, interest in them has only recently begun to significantly rise.

This is due to the negative aspects of more conventional light bulbs with regards to environmental issues.

Millions of pounds have been invested by the leading lamp manufacturers into improving the performance and quality of their Energy Efficient Lamps.

Newer CFLs have a longer life, are flicker-free, and work more efficiently through a much wider room temperature range.

They are also of course, far more eco-friendly than the older traditional light bulbs.

This type of lamp is now able to be used in nearly any domestic or commercial lighting setting. Alongside all the savings to be made on energy and maintenance, it’s clear to see that energy saving lamps are the future of lighting.

Do the Right Patio Furniture Covers Exist for Me?

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

In time I hope to find the perfect patio furniture covers for my patio set. I’ve done a bit of hunting so far and I am not going to give up until I find success. Now that summer is around the corner, my kids want to have every meal outside. That means that almost every evening after I get home from work, I’m washing the top of my patio table with a brush and a bucket of warm soapy water.

The other reason I wanted patio furniture covers is that the sun and the rain and the snow can really damaged the finish on my wooden furniture. I have some lovely furniture that looks teak but isn’t teak. I got a great deal on it at Canadian Tire a few years ago. It has really held up well and I’m pleased with it. However, it can show some age.

Almost every autumn I rough sand the table and chairs, re-apply a teak or walnut stain and then rub some tung oil into the wood. The whole procedure generally takes 2 half days and the furniture really looks brand new when I’m finished. I have no doubt that this little effort has added years to the life of my furniture. I don’t really mind the job but having some outdoor patio furniture covers might make it less necessary?like maybe every three years.

A Plumbing victory

Friday, May 29th, 2009

I have ten plumbers who work for me. They are most apt plumbers. They are my permanent employees. And I do have many daily wage workers, who work for me on call. The reason for my success is definitely, the city in which I live. The city has been quite lucky to me. I have started as a small plumber in the city. Today I have become a known plumber of the city.

My each and every day work varies, depending upon the calls that I get for the plumbing issues. The plumbers who work for me are very skillful and they like to work under my guidance. Now, we have created a niche for ourselves in the town and we are planning to expand our business to other parts of the state also.

The daily wages workers are extremely generous to us as well. This is a two way process. I do take very good care of my employees. I also help them regularly in enhancing their skills. This is very much required in order to sustain the day to day competition. In order to be on top, I went abroad to study plumbing.

Choosing the Type of Sod for Landscaping

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

Sodding has a number of advantages over seeding and that is why a lot of people prefer it. A green lawn or a recreational surface is easily achievable with sod. It also addresses erosion and controls it right away. Sod also eliminates dust and mud so it is almost as good as done once you plant it. While establishing sod for landscaping, it also has weed control.

Another good thing about sod is that it can be planted anytime so there would be no problems no matter what season you choose to do your landscaping. Maybe the best reason to choose it over seeding is that it can be used for total installation and it is just so much easier than actually planting grass.

Your first step is to choose the right type of sod. You need to choose sod that will not only have the right appearance but also how much maintenance it needs to thrive. For instance, there are certain types of sod that do well with shade while others do better with sun exposure. This means that the layout of the back or front yard should also be considered to make sure the sod that is chosen will survive.

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

A lot of avid gardeners like to save money by growing their own perennials from seeds. This may sound difficult but the hardest part of taking on such a project is just getting started and knowing how to plan ahead. It may take a bit of extra time to grow all your plants and flowers from seeds but in the long run you’ll have a great feeling of satisfaction in addition to a beautiful garden.

Obviously, the first thing you need to do is choose what type of plants you want to grow and purchase seeds. You’ll want to research the different types of seeds available because depending on the type of plant they will have different growing requirements. For example, in order to germinate, some seeds will need to be exposed to freezing temperatures.

Certain types of plants including plhox, delphinium, and bleeding heart will need to be started outside in the fall. You can usually learn the unique requirements for different types of seeds by reading the package and following the directions. For seeds that require cold treatment you can arrange them in flats and set them outside for between 30 and 45 days. After this they should be placed inside under lights.

Best Plants For April

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

Except for the extreme North, the gardening season begins about the first of April in all parts 0f the area. First thing on the agenda is the annual spring clean up.

This consists principally of the removal of the debris that accumulated in the yard and on the lawn during the winter, the uncovering of garden beds and the removal of coverings from evergreens, recently planted trees, clematis vines, roses and other plants that require special winter protection.

Usually the home lawn gets the first attention and there is little need to encourage this activity early in the season. However, in many quarters there seems to be considerable reluctance to remove the leaves or other coverings from garden beds until later in April when frosty weather is less likely to occur.

As a rule, winter protective coverings are kept in place too late and as a consequence, plants may be injured unnecessarily. This is particularly true of roses. Mildew, molds and diseases get established on the canes when coverings are left on too long. Plants are much better off if exposed to the weather early in April. Roses are never injured by low temperatures that may re-occur for a brief time during this month. They develop better when exposed to the sun and air early in the season. It is important to remove winter mulch early so that the earth that was hilled over the base for special winter protection will thaw rapidly, permitting removal as soon as possible.
